INTERVIEW TIPS
PREPARATION
- LOCATION - Read a map to locate the interview place. Find out which transport takes you there. Visit the place before the interview date.
- SLEEP - Get a good night sleep the night before, otherwise you may feel tired and less alert and even anxious.
- ARRIVAL - Arrive half an hour early to give you time to relax . Have time for coffee or walk to calm yourself. Visit the cloak room and check your hair.
- PAPER WORK - Take a copy of CV with you.
Clothes
- Nothing too formal or too casual.
- Dress should be clean, tidy and comfortable.
- Wear clothes that give you confidence.
- Wear clothes that reflect your personality.
Play it safe, dress for the occasion. The golden rule is to wear outfit that is clean and neat, yet comfortable. Avoid tight waist bands and irritating straps. Detail is important, ensure that hair looks tidy, finger nails are clean and shoes are polished. Check buttons and zips. Check for things that can make you feel uneasy and give negative impressions.
Practise
- Rehearse your interview technique.
- Rehearse in front of the mirror or use video.
- Rehearse with a friend or member of family.
- Practice giving answers you are happy with.
START OF INTERVIEW
Greetings
- Say hello
- Say good morning
- Shake hands
- Introduce yourself - Say "nice to meet you"
- Always smile
- Show confidence and don't be timid. Take the initiative to shake hands first whilst introducing yourself.
DURING THE INTERVIEW
Body language
- Smile
- Eye contact - look at the interviewer.
- Don't fold arms, relax hands casually on lap.
- Cross legs or not, but don't stick them out.
Try to keep an interested expression. Don't keep crossing and uncrossing your legs, as it can be irritating and signal nervousness. Display composure and poise; avoid fidgeting .
ANSWERING QUESTIONS
- Be honest, don't invent answers.
If you cannot answer a question, say so.
If you do not understand, ask to be repeated. - Always be positive and optimistic.
- Highlight your achievements.
- Don't be cynical or sarcastic.
- Use humour to show warmth.
QUESTIONS TO ASK AND AVOID
- Ask about career prospects
- Ask about job training opportunities
- Avoid talk of salary
- Avoid terms and conditions
- Never ask if you got the job and never say you have no questions
